Ruby Barrow Henry, age 92, of Fruita, Colorado went home to be with her Lord on January 24, 2008 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Linda Henry and Lou Becker, in Boulder, CO. Ruby was born, the first of twins, about 10:00 AM followed by her brother Raymond at 10:30 AM on September 13, 1915 in Allen, Collin County, Texas. To the marriage of her father, William Soloman Barrow and mother Virginia Frances Williams, were born 5 additional children, Bertha, Ervin, Vernon, Nolan and Claborn. Following the death of her mother, her father married “Miss Lillian” and to that marriage was born Robert, Dub, OV, Mittie, Leta, Jerold and Ernest.
Ruby received a miraculous healing of a devastating illness at the age of 18 and shortly thereafter gave her heart to the Lord. In a few months she felt called to the ministry and in April of 1943 was ordained by the Assemblies of God. Sister Henry as she was known by so many who knew her and sat under her ministry was a true pioneer for women ministers. For many years she traveled much of the West holding revival meetings throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming and California. Ruby was blessed in her early ministry by the loving mentoring of Rev. Thomas and Bertha Christian who were church pioneers having started many Assembly of God churches. While holding a revival in Fruita, Colorado, Ruby became acquainted with a widower with two young sons, Paul and Kenny, and soon thereafter fell in love with and married Harold Henry on July 14, 1947. To that marriage Linda was born.
Shortly after the marriage they moved to Glenwood Springs to assume the pastorate of the newly formed Assembly of God where they pastored for 4 ˝ years. Moving back to Fruita, Ruby continued her ministry by holding periodic revivals and teaching Sunday School in her local church. Over the years Harold and Ruby opened their home to over 30 foster children including one family of 5 children (Jimmy, Eleanor, Marie, Bobby and Dora Rodriguez) they raised for 17 years and Kay Burchett who lived with them for over 7 years. Sewing, gardening and canning were an important part of providing for such an extended family and the Henry’s were well known for the sweet corn and tomatoes they grew. In her retirement years Ruby cared for and ministered to “older” residents at The Willows Retirement Center.
Ruby is survived by her daughter Linda Henry (Lou Becker) of Boulder, CO, sons Paul Henry (LaVila) of Oklahoma City, OK and Ken Henry (Jan) Fruita, CO, grandchildren Pam Henry, Houston, TX, Shanna Miller(Jeffrey), Fruita, CO, Sharla Skillicorn(John), Fruita, CO, Shane Henry(Megan), Lakewood, CO, Dr. Kelly Henry(Cherry), Carlsbad, NM; 9 great-grandchildren, Britton Henry, Rachel Skillicorn, Rylan Miller, Colvin Miller, Amber Skillicorn, Brady Henry, Erica Skillicorn, Karson Henry and Kelsey Skillicorn; brothers Robert(Martha), Dub(Margie), and Ernest(Pat) of Texas and Jerold(Judy) of Missouri and many nephews and nieces and a multitude of friends.
